Tara Crewe M.Sc., B.Sc., has worked with Bird Studies Canada and Environment Canada since May 2004 to develop and assess population monitoring programs at various geographic scales, and to analyze large datasets to produce population trends and develop Indices of Biotic Integrity for marsh bird and amphibian communities. In the upcoming year, she will analyze a 15-year database of standardized daily counts of migrating Monarch Butterflies in fall at two sites at Long Point, Ontario (north shore of Lake Erie). Population trends and power analyses will be produced for the 15-year time frame in order to assess the utility of such a program as a long-term monitoring tool for a potential network of monitoring sites, perhaps modeled after the Canadian Migration Monitoring Network for birds.
